Community Risk Reduction Team Holds First CERT Class

Our Community Risk Reduction personnel held its first Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) certification class February 22-24, and successfully trained 24 Health Department and EPFD personnel to serve as disaster response personnel.  CRR personnel will now move on to becoming train-the-trainers and master instructors, allowing CRR to hold multiple CERT classes annually and train hundreds of El Paso area citizens on how to assist first responders should a disaster strike our area.

CERT trains students on how to integrate into the ICS system, triage and treat medical casualties, mark buildings that have been searched by CERT teams, communicate and work under first responders, shut off utilities, recognize possible hazardous materials and terrorism events, and prevent others from becoming casualties through scene control and marking.

The class was successful due to the commitment and dedication of several area agencies and CERT instructors to include: FF Alex Miranda-master CERT instructor P26B, Paul Solis-Del Valle HS Fire tech coordinator, Josh Garcia-Ysleta Del Sur Emergency Management coordinator, EPFD CRR personnel, VFW Auxiliary 8782, Del Valle HS drama club and El Paso Community College Fire Technology Program.
